New Texas Cell Phone Law

New Texas Cell Phone Law

Dear CCISD Families and Staff,

As part of a statewide initiative to minimize distractions, promote academic achievement, and enhance student well-being, Governor Greg Abbott has signed a law prohibiting student use of cell phones and other personal communication devices during the school day.

The research behind cell phone-free schools is so compelling that most of our intermediate schools have already adopted cell phone-free practices for the past two years and, unless otherwise instructed by a teacher, high school students have been expected to put electronic devices away.

This new law reflects many of our current practices and extends the cell phone policy to include other times of the school day, such as passing periods and lunch.

I ask for your support and patience as we navigate the implementation of the law districtwide.

As you will read in the flyer below, students may still have their electronic devices with them, but they need to be powered off and placed in their backpack, purse, or a bag. They can use their personal devices on the school bus and up until the first bell, which signals the start of the school day. The devices must then be powered off and stowed away until dismissal.

In the event of a school emergency, campus administrators can give students permission to use their cell phones to contact their families.

As with any change, there will naturally be questions from students and families. Our campus administrators are prepared to answer.
