CCISD Student Named as Top 300 Innovator in National Competition

Melina Kumar, a freshman at Clear Lake High School in Clear Creek ISD, was recognized as a top 300 innovator in the 10th annual Broadcom MASTERS national science competition.

Kumar had previously developed her winning project throughout her time at Brookside Intermediate and earned second place in the biochemistry junior division at the Texas Science and Engineering Fair last year. It is titled “Reducing the Risk of Diabetes: A Novel Approach for the Development of a Sensitive Glucagon ELISA.”

“This is a wonderful example of girls in STEM and the opportunities that can come from participating in Science and Engineering Fairs,” said Secondary Science Coordinator Lisa Wooley. “Broadcom MASTERS is a premier STEM competition that is dedicated to research in science. In CCISD, our wish is to ignite learning for all. Melina is proof of the spirit of exploration in our district.”

The Top 300 MASTERS were selected by a panel of scientists, engineers and educators from 1,841 total students across the country. The goal of Broadcom MASTERS, a program of the Society for Science, is to inspire young scientists, engineers and innovators to solve the grand challenges of the 21st century. Only students who are named in the top 10% of their science fairs are eligible to enter to the competition.
