During a May 5 ceremony at Clear View High School, which is home to the District’s Certified Nursing Assistant program, leaders from both CCISD and HCA Houston Healthcare along with educators, friends and family cheered on the newest HCA employees as they reviewed and signed the formal commitment letters for paid positions as Patient Care Technicians in the hospital system. In addition to the offered salary, students received sign-on bonuses of $2,000 and $1,000 for the full- or part-time positions, respectively. Many are enrolling in college courses while they work for HCA, for which HCA also provides tuition reimbursement assistance.
“Your commitment to learning about how a hospital operates and your interest in the health care field has led you to this monumental moment this evening,” said HCA Houston Healthcare Chief Executive Officer Todd Caliva. “You took the initiative, pursued your interest, interviewed for and secured this exciting new position. Congratulations!”
Each of the students completed a health science program at their respective CCISD high school in preparation. As part of HCA’s StarTech program, the new team members will undertake five weeks of training and then be partnered with nurses directly caring for patients in either full- or part-time positions.
“This evening’s signing is actually the culmination of a multilayered and model partnership,” said CCISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Eric Williams. “I want to thank all those in the HCA hospital system who had a hand in growing our students’ expertise and providing this competitive advantage. This includes leadership, physicians, nurses and mentors.”
Williams also recognized the health science teachers in attendance emphasizing that leading students to their signing day and a salaried job in their chosen career field is the ultimate inspiration for becoming an educator.
