CCISD Computer Science Students Showcase Skills at the Capitol

Six Clear Springs High School students joined five other school districts from across the state for the Code @ the Capitol event in Austin presented by Computer Science for Texas (CS4TX).

Janice Thomas, Mariam Aziz, Zara Siddiqi, David Corvaglia, Zaid Albustami and Caleb Lightfoot were recognized by the Texas State Legislature and had the opportunity to showcase their computer science projects while teaching representatives how to code.

“I am very proud of my students for advocating for their passions and excelling in the learning,” said Charles Wang, Clear Springs computer science teacher. “It is inspiring to witness my students take ownership of their education and pursue their interests in computer science with such enthusiasm. It is particularly gratifying when I can see my students apply the concepts they have learned in real-world situations.”

The overall purpose of the event was to support computer science education and increase future technology workforce development in Texas. This includes improving funding and developing other opportunities for computer science instruction.

"I'm inspired by people who didn't have easy paths into the computer science field but ended up in successful careers," said senior Janice Thomas. "Hearing the stories told by the Google and Amazon workers during the event proves that no matter who you are, we all can learn valuable career skills by studying computer science topics.”

CS4TXv is a non-profit coalition supported by advocacy groups, educators and business leaders – including Amazon, Dell Technologies and Google – dedicated to bringing computer science to every student in Texas.
