Playground Replacements & Adaptive Swings Part of 2023 Bond

New elementary playground equipment, including adaptive swing sets and walking tracks, is on the ticket for the 2023 Bond Proposition B package. A total of 13 elementary schools would see at least one play structure replaced and 11 would receive the ADA swings.

“The equipment that had previously been satisfactory during the 2017 Bond has now exceeded its lifecycle in 2023,” said Paul Miller, assistant superintendent of support services.

Through the 2017 Bond program, CCISD began replacing playgrounds and walking tracks at elementary schools across the District. The adaptive swings have previously been installed at 13 campuses for special education students to enjoy, but the 2023 Bond would fund the additional campuses that currently need them.

“In the past, PTAs would fund and try to maintain playgrounds over time but ultimately the cost and effort required to do that was too great, so we had to take over,” said Miller. “We also want our students with special needs to have adequate and safe play structures during the school day to benefit from with the addition of the swings.”

Walking tracks at Armand Bayou, Bay, Brookwood, Hyde, Robinson and Ward elementary schools would also be updated to 8-foot concrete paths due to the difficulty to maintain the current gravel tracks.

“The district standard now is concrete which allows us to maintain them indefinitely,” said Miller. “They have a much longer lifecycle and are much safer to walk on for students and staff.”
