CCISD Breaks Ground on New Elementary School

On April 18, District leaders, city officials, business partners, community members and future students gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of Florence Campbell Elementary, the Clear Creek Independent School District’s 27th elementary school. Florence McMahan Campbell, a longtime educator within the District, is the mother of Travis Campbell whose family donated the land on which the campus will be built in her honor.

Galveston-Brazoria Cooperative for the Hearing Impaired (GBCHI) students, who will also be future graduates of the new campus, led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance and helped celebrate this milestone for their program. The GBCHI is currently housed at Gilmore Elementary, but will be relocated to their brand-new building when the school opens.

“The soil on the land in which we stand today will really go about planting the seeds of the future of tomorrow,” said Superintendent Dr. Greg Smith. “I am confident that the students who will attend Florence Campbell Elementary will in fact experience the critical virtues of a strong public education and chart new pathways for learning.”

The intent of this new campus is to address the extreme overcrowding conditions down the road at Hall Elementary and throughout the western part of League City. Along with the new GBCHI building, some of the other features of this 1,000-student capacity elementary school include designated collaborative and creative spaces for each grade level and an expanded stacking lane for vehicles in an effort to move cars off the main thoroughfares.

“We are happy this school is going in,” said League City Mayor Pat Hallisey. “With Travis and the Campbell family donating the land and also the funding to get it done through the generosity of the people within the District, it will be a great addition to League City.”

The $43.0 million school was approved by voters as part of the 2017 CCISD Bond program. The project, led by VLK architects and general contractor Drymalla Construction, is expected to be open for learning in August 2019.
