During the celebration, fourth grader Alexander Barajas was called up to the front of the gymnasium where he was surprised with a special announcement. Campus staff revealed that his essay had been named as the 2020 District VI Texas History Winner of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas Essay Contest. He will now move on to the State Competition.

“This writing contest, which is open to all fourth and seventh graders, provides the opportunity for students to engage in the writing process and learn a little Texas history at the same time,” said Literacy Coach Margo Lewallen. “It’s also a great way to practice for the STAAR writing test. Alex was one of four students who participated and is such a great writer.”

Barajas gleamed with pride as the crowd cheered for his accomplishment. His essay focused on the history of the Texian Navy, and everyone could tell he became passionate about the subject through his month-long research.

“I learned that the Texian Navy was actually a really big part of Texas History and our state wouldn’t be what it is today without them,” said Barajas. “I am ecstatic to move on to state. My heart is beating so fast!”

Barajas will receive a cash prize for winning both the local chapter and District VI competitions. His work will be celebrated during the District Essay Award Ceremony on April 4 in San Antonio, Texas.
