According to Special Olympics Coordinator and Coach Ashley Burges, CCISD has been participating in the Special Olympics for over 30 years.

Students thoroughly enjoy every minute of the experience every year.
“They absolutely love competing in the tournaments because these competitions are all about them,” she said.

Five teams comprised of 8-12 students participated in this year’s area competition.

Clear Creek High School freshman Braden Fleming was proud of his teammates and enjoyed being a part of the tournament.

“You get to meet a lot of new people and see other people playing,” he said. “It’s all about having fun!”

Clear Falls High School senior Macie Lewis liked going to the basketball tournament because she was surrounded by people who meant a lot to her.

“I love playing because I get to be with all of my friends and my very best friend, Valerie,” she said. “I also get to be with my favorite coaches, Coach Ashley, Coach Grubb and Coach Jeff.”

All teams were awarded medals for participation and were scheduled to play in the State Basketball Tournament in Mansfield, TX, at the end of March before the extended school closure took effect due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It really is so sad for the athletes who cannot participate given the current situation,” Burges said.

Unfortunately, Challenger fans will miss seeing the athletes participate in activities that bring them joy and provide a sense of accomplishment and self-worth.

“There is truly nothing like witnessing the pure happiness and excitement of an athlete when they cross the finish line for the first time or make their first basket in a basketball game,” she said.

“That joy and feeling of success and achievement is shared by all family, friends, teammates and coaches.”
