DECA Students Earn Gold for School Enterprises

Three DECA school-based enterprises from the Clear Creek Independent School District have earned 2017 Chapter Certifications. Clear Creek High School, Clear Falls High School and Clear Lake High School are now Gold-level Certified under the Food Service Operations category. This recognition is held by only 16 other schools in Texas.

School-based enterprises, which also might be known to some as a school store, are entrepreneurial operations in a school setting that provide goods and services to meet the needs of the market. They are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate national curriculum standards in marketing, finance, hospitality or management.

“This is such an exciting time for the high school marketing and Career and Technical Education departments,” said Lauren Jeffcoat, marketing teacher and DECA advisor for Clear Falls. “With the expansion of our school stores and now the Gold Level certifications, our students are literally running small businesses from the ground up. Our kids have worked so hard to exceed in each of the 10 business standards including financial analysis, human resources, promotion and market planning. Seeing them take what they have learned from working in our stores and apply it to the certification has been rewarding.”

Clear Creek’s Cat Corner Store, Clear Falls’ The Knight Stand, and Clear Lake’s The Lake Shop are all operated by DECA students enrolled in marketing, finance, hospitality, business management or entrepreneurship courses offered at each high school. The retail stores are stocked with everything from spirit shirts to food and beverages.

To become a DECA-certified chapter, the students completed a written project outlining how their business adheres to select model business standards. Stores earning Gold-level Certification automatically qualify for DECA’s International Career Development Conference this April in Anaheim, California. While there, DECA students from all three CCISD high schools will attend professional development sessions specific to entrepreneurship, share ideas and learn from others, and compete in an event focused on best practices of retail operations. The students will also be recognized for their Gold Certification status achievement.
