Dear District Spelling Bee Parents and Students,

Congratulations on making it to the District Spelling Bee! We are so proud of your accomplishment and look forward to a successful District Bee. Below is some helpful information:

Due to COVID-19, we unfortunately cannot have an audience in attendance. The live feed link and password for the event has been directly shared with Spelling Bee parents via e-mail.

REMINDER: Words in rounds 1 and 2 will be taken from the school bee study list.  Starting with round 3, we will use words from “Words of the Champions.”

Student drop off/pickup:

Arrival: Please drop off your student at the Mossman Elementary courtyard gate that leads to the gym/cafeteria. There will be a large Spelling Bee sign at the gate as well as someone there to greet you. You will stay in your car, complete a registration form which provides us pick up information, drop off your student, and then proceed to a location of your choice to watch the event live streamed. We will need to know who will be picking up your student when they are finished for the day and that person must bring an ID. Only Spelling Bee participants and district staff will be entering the building.

Pick up: Upon providing an incorrect spelling of a word, you may pick your child up in between rounds, before the event is complete. Please pull up to the gate, a staff member will verify information and then call for another staff member to bring your student out to your car. This is similar to the car rider line during regular school operations. Parents will not be able to enter the building.

8:30 a.m. – Students arrive and check-in

8:45 a.m. – Livestream will begin with instructions and practice rounds

9:00 a.m. – Official Spelling Bee will begin

Spelling Bee Information:

Please see the attached Spelling Bee rules. If at any time you feel that you need to dispute a situation, you will need to complete and submit this FORM and a CCISD representative will review the dispute and respond to you. Please note that you MUST fill out the form in the round that you are disputing. Once a round is over and another round has started, you cannot dispute a previous round.

We will follow all district COVID-19 safety guidelines. The students will be seated in chairs, socially distanced, and wearing masks in the event space. When it is their turn to spell, they will be led to the stage. Students will be permitted to remove their masks when it is their turn to spell, if they choose. If they want to write down a word during their spelling turn, they will be given paper and pencil and both will be discarded when they are finished. A staff member will be on stage to adjust the microphone as needed in order to limit surface contact. We will have several breaks in which we will provide water and snacks for each student while maintaining social distance.

Your student will not be allowed to bring their cell phone into the event space.  They will be allowed to leave it at a designated spot in an adjacent room with any other belongings.  There will be a CCISD staff member in the adjacent room to ensure everything is secure.

Spelling Rounds:

Words in rounds 1 and 2 will be taken from the school bee study list.  Starting with round 3, we will use words from “Words of the Champions.”  It is likely that in the later rounds of the Bee, spellers will receive words selected by SCRIPPS from the Merriam-Webster Unabridged dictionary. Students may not have previously studied these words.

If your student is the CCISD spelling champ or runner-up, we will ask that you stay at pick up to fill out information for the next step which is the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee. This will be an online spelling test on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

Please contact William Eastman at weastman@ccisd.net or Karen Hearn at khearn1@ccisd.net.

We want to wish all of our spellers the best of luck!
