A special Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House was held at LaVace Stewart Elementary on September 27, 2019, to celebrate the school’s new spaces and renovations.

City officials, local organizations, parents, District leaders and former staff gathered to pay tribute to the school’s long history and bright future. Students leaders toured guests through the new spaces and worked together to create their own scripts, highlighting the things they each enjoyed most in each section.

“Today we celebrate the spacious beautiful building that Stewart Elementary has become over the last 107 years,” said Principal Melissa Sanchez. “Nestled between two great communities, Kemah and Clear Lake Shores, we are fortunate to have many community supporters helping our staff and students reach their goals each year. These major renovations and additions will only help further these goals.”

The Stewart Elementary addition and renovations project was one of the first undertaken for the 2017 Bond Program, which was passed in May of that year by voters. Eighteen classrooms were added on to the existing building, including a full pre-kindergarten wing, to support enrollment growth. Portable buildings were also removed and replaced with a new playground. Other upgrades include a new roof, flooring, mechanical and electrical throughout.

The original proposed amount for the project, which was awarded to VLK Architects and ICI Construction, Inc., was $18.95 million. However, the project expenditures to date are $16.72 million.
