Bay City Article
In one of the largest tournaments of the season the Clear Brook Speech and Debate Team demonstrated its strength yet again as it traveled to Bay City High School last weekend. Despite distance, lack of sleep, and tough competition the Wolverine Speech and Debate team once again brought home many trophies and recognition for CBHS and CCISD.
With their newly formed Oral Interpretation class, Clear Brook saw the fruits of their labor pay off by witnessing wins by Kelly Hairfield who had back to back wins with 3rd place in Dramatic Interpretation and 2nd in Humorous Interpretation. Storytelling competitors also saw their share of victories, with Stephanie Dodd placing 5th and Kelly Hairfield coming in 6th. Television Commercials were yet another event where the team did quite well, with Karl Schaefer coming in 4th, Kelly Hairfield in 5th and Stephanie Dodd in 6th. Adnan Mohamed and Sara Moran were also active in leading the team to victory by claiming 4th and 8th place respectively in Novice Impromptu Speaking, followed by Senior Impromptu wins by Brandon Wardlaw, 1st and Ross Adams, 3rd. One of Brook’s group improvisations teams, consisting of Ross Adams, Karl Schaefer and Lindsay Bernsen brought home the 5th place award.
Debate and other speaking events were also not without their share of winners, either. Alex Schiefler placed 2nd in Championship Lincoln Douglas Debate while Mohammed Al-Hendy and Brandon Wardlaw broke to quarter-finals. Championship Cross Examination Debate saw the team of Matt Garber and Aziz Ali place first overall while novice CX partners Jonathan Hua and Zack Woekner broke to quarter-finals. In Student Congress Elyssa Klann placed 4th overall with Ross Adams close behind in 6th place. In Foreign Extemporaneous speaking Brandon Wardlaw placed 2nd with Mohamed Al-Hendy close behind in 4th place.
The evening ended with the top speaker award for the entire tournament going to Brandon Wardlaw.
Clear Brook’s Speech & Debate squad now has yet more students nearing
the final number needed to qualify for the Texas Forensic Association state
meet which is to be held in March of next year. At present, the team has six
qualified students with no fewer than four in the wings who hope to qualify
by the first of next year.
