The
district transports approximately 20,000 students to and
from school every day. In
recent years, Clear Creek ISD has been adding two to four
bus routes each school year to accommodate growth. Covering
103-square miles, Clear Creek ISD’s 226 buses travel
approximately 2.5 million miles a year, which is equivalent
to traveling around the world 100 times. The buses travel
13,661 miles daily, which is equal to traveling from New
York to California 4.8 times!
Clear
Creek ISD grows at a rate of 900 - 1,000 new students every
year. By 2020, the district is expecting to serve more than
52,000 students. This increase in demand will call
for more buses. New buses come with large price tags; therefore,
purchasing additional buses requires long-range strategic
financial planning. The cost for a standard 72-passenger
school bus is approximately $82,000 and a 53-passenger special
education bus costs approximately $92,000. In 2007, the
cost for a new bus increased by almost $20,000 due to more
rigorous emission standards set by the Environmental Protection
Agency.
Of
the district’s 226 buses, 33 buses are more than 20
years old and 80 buses are more than 10 years old. According
to the National Association of State Directors of Pupil
Transportation Services, the anticipated lifecycle of a
school bus is 12 to 15 years.
The
district operates several buses equipped to meet the needs
of special education students. Typically, special
needs buses are 53 passenger buses that can accommodate
14 - 21 walk-on students and three to four wheelchair students.
The special education buses are equipped with lap
belts and reinforced bus seats. Track flooring is also included,
which allows the maintenance department to add or remove
seating depending on specific student needs. The Clear Creek
ISD transportation department also provides door-to-door
service for special education students.

Clear
Creek ISD employs 175 specially trained bus drivers,
plus 31 bus monitors who assist the bus drivers on
special needs routes.
Prior
to becoming a Clear Creek ISD bus driver, candidates
must have an excellent driving record, pass the state’s
physical exams and complete approximately 35 hours
of training.
Clear
Creek ISD installed video cameras on each bus for
improved student safety; in addition to the on-board
radios on the buses, all district bus drivers now
carry cell phones to improve communication.
In
the coming years, integrated technology, such as GPS
monitoring systems, could become a standard for Clear
Creek ISD buses.
