CCISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES CALLS FOR PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED TAX INCREASE

League City – The Board of Trustees for the Clear Creek Independent School District is considering a proposed property tax increase of four cents per $100 evaluation. A public hearing will be held on Monday, August 25, 2008.

The increase will enable the District to pay for rising fuel and utility costs as well as keep teacher salaries competitive.  We’ve exercised significant restraint by not trying to increase the tax rate,” said Superintendent Dr. Greg Smith, “But times are tough.”  The District estimates electricity costs for the next school year will cost $2 million more than what was budgeted last year. Fuel will cost $1.2 million more.

Board of Trustees President Stuart Stromeyer is hopeful the community will understand the need for a tax increase. “Right now the state funding formula for public schools does not account for inflation,” said Stromeyer. “The only way we can balance the budget and battle rising costs is to increase the maintenance and operation tax by four cents.”  There will be no rate increase for the debt service tax which will remain at 32 cents.

The public hearing will be held in the Board Room at the Education Support Center, 2425 East Main Street in League City at 6:00 PM on August 25, 2008.
