CLHS Sweeps UIL District Debate Meet
LEAGUE CITY – Clear Lake High School won first, second and third places at the University Interscholastic League District 24-5A Cross-Examination Debate Meet held at Brazoswood High School in Clute Jan. 26 – 27.
The team of Oliver Chen and Grace Zhang claimed first place at the tournament. Aziz Ali and Billy McDowell won second place. With their victories at district, Chen, Zhang, Ali and McDowell now are qualified to compete at the UIL State Cross-Examination Debate Meet March 16 – 17 at The University of Texas at Austin.
Clear Lake freshmen Lingxi Chenyang and Jenny Le won third place and are first alternate for the state tournament.
“UIL debate competition develops skills in our students that directly prepare them for real world situations by challenging their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities,” said Jana Riggins, UIL debate director. “This year’s cross-examination debate topic required students to research extensively national service programs.”
