This technical course is designed to focus on personal development, interpersonal relationships, effective individual and family functioning, and career preparation - all within a changing society. The course addresses personal identity, responsibilities of living as an independent adult, relationship development outside the family, and factors related to marital success. Special attention is focused on understanding the roles, responsibilities, and impact of the family on individuals and society, promoting and strengthening the family unit, and managing multiple family, community and career roles.

Preparation for Parenting

Notes: $15.00 Fee *In order to receive ATC credit for this course, the student must also take and pass Child Development with an 80 or better.

This laboratory course is designed to provide individuals with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in preparation to function effectively in the role of parent or caregiver. Content stresses parental responsibilities, child guidance techniques, parents as positive role models, parents as their children’s first teacher, and parenting practices which promote a child’s development, health, safety, and well-being. Managing family crises, managing multiple roles of family members throughout the life cycle, and career preparation are additional topics.

This course is designed to focus on knowledge and skills related to the development, care, guidance, and protection of children. Instruction addresses the principles and procedures for promoting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of young children, including those with special needs. Other topics include characteristics of quality child care, options for the care and education of children, and the management of multiple family, community, and family roles.

This laboratory course includes a preschool classroom (Trooper School) with the high school students actually teaching preschool children (ages 3-5). High school students prepare by studying the mental, physical, emotional, and social development of the preschooler. The students plan age appropriate activities for the children, design and prepare lesson plans and bulletin boards, prepare nutritious snacks, practice positive guidance techniques, and interact with preschoolers. Other topics studied include procedures and policies of a day care center, directing young children in routine activities, management of a center, and employment opportunities.

Ready, Set, Teach! I & II (TEACH I & II)
2 credits (state) GPA Level 2
Grade Level(s): 11-12 Prerequisite(s): Prep for Parenting and Child Development
recommended. Notes: $15.00 Fee; Application Required; (*only Ready, Set, Teach I counts towards ATC.) Transportation required. This course will satisfy PE graduation requirements.

Ready, Set, Teach! is a field-based internship which provides students background knowledge of child and adolescent development principles as well as principles of effective teaching practices. Students in Ready, Set, Teach!, which can be taken for one or two years, work under the joint direction and supervision of both a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher and exemplary educators in direct instructional roles with elementary, middle, and/or high school aged students. Students from the class plan and direct individualized instruction and group activities, prepare instructional materials, assist with record keeping, make physical arrangements, and complete other responsibilities of classroom teachers. The students are involved in observations as well as direct student instruction; placement rotations are utilized to allow students to have experiences in a full range of education career roles, grade levels, subject areas, and ability groups. During the course of each week, students enrolled in Ready, Set, Teach! are involved in instruction from the Family and Consumer Sciences teacher as well as involved in supervised field-based observations and applications of principles/practices studied in the class. Student will travel to mentoring feeder schools to teach.
