Science Fair Judges

The annual Clear Creek ISD Science and Engineering Fair has all the materials and elements of the perfect partnership:  Inquisitive students, patient parents, guiding teachers and a supportive community.

It is that final ingredient, however, in the form of the volunteer Science Fair Judge, which helps bring the Fair to successful fruition each year. Judges are the lifeblood of the Fair devoting their time and attention to CCISD students who have worked hard over several months conducting independent research on topics and hypotheses of their choosing.

To evaluate the more than 800 projects that have advanced to the District Fair each year, approximately 200 volunteer judges are needed. This includes projects at both the elementary and secondary levels. Even though CCISD is fortunate to be surrounded by experts and professionals in the fields of aerospace, specialty chemical and the medical community, volunteers do not have to be rocket scientists or Ph.D.s to serve as a judge. Volunteer judges are provided with clear instructions on how to evaluate and score the projects as well as how to provide constructive feedback to students. Judges select the Grand Award winners and place winners in categories ranging from Animal Science and Behavioral and Social Sciences to Environmental Science and Robotics and Intelligent Machines.

Many judges return year after year to participate. CCISD Science and Engineering Fair Director Mike Jenkins has volunteered as a judge for 22 years. Jenkins has served as Director for more than 10 years.

“I enjoyed Science Fair when I was a student,” said Jenkins. “I liked that I had a semester-long project that after putting in a great deal of time and effort I was then able to defend my work in a persuasive manner,” he said. “I am passionate about the Fair because through this experience, I gained confidence to speak publicly. Having to present your project is a scary thing for high school students, and then gaining this confidence will serve you for the rest of your life.”

This year, both elementary and secondary projects that have advanced to the District Science and Engineering Fair will be judged at the on Monday, January 14, 2019.
