McWhirter Elementary: Professional Development Lab
- This is a partnership between UHCL where candidates have the opportunity to have some of their field based courses taught on campus and their field based experiences take place on campus.
-Candidates participate in extensive Professional Development opportunities on campus that occur within the teaching day
-Small classes 18:1 Ratio
-UHCL professors on campus
-Innovative program where classes are made up of 9 English speaking students and 9 Spanish speaking students and follows the Language of Instruction model
-Currently in place for Kindergarten through 3rd grade 2007-2008 school year.
-Goal is to have students become bi-cultural, bilingual and bi-literate, therefore they are able to both speak and write in Spanish/English
-Featured on KHOU
-Campus has monthly visitors from statewide to learn more about the program and visit classrooms
-Presented at National Association for Bilingual Education Spring 2007 (NABE)

- Apply for Additional Certification by Examination
- Apply for Educational Aide Certification

- Educators certified in another state or country may apply for a One-Year or Standard Certificate following a review of credentials
- Maintain your mailing address (required by SBEC board rule)

The Mentor Program office number is 281-281-0152. Additional support will be provided in the following ways:

Mentor/Buddy A teacher who will serve as a resource and assist you throughout the year.

Campus Lead Mentor An expert teacher on your campus who will facilitate mentor/mentee relationships and coordinate campus-based professional development.

Support Team A retired or “stay-at-home” teacher who will provide focused support.

Campus Administrators Principals and Assistant Principals on your campus dedicated to your success.

Administrative Staff Coordinators and Directors who will share expertise in curriculum and instruction.
