EIC LOCAL FOR FRESHMAN ENTERING HIGH SCHOOL AUGUST 2007 AND THEREAFTER

Frequently Asked Questions

1.         Which students are affected by the new EIC Local policy?

All students who enter high school in August 2007 and thereafter.

2.         Why did CCISD feel the need to adopt a new EIC Policy?

With the implementation of the new graduation plan requiring four math and four science credits for all students entering high school in August 2007 or thereafter, Clear Creek ISD Administration felt the need to evaluate all policies related to graduation. After researching twenty-five comparable districts in Texas, Clear Creek ISD Administration proposed a new EIC Local Policy which would be a truer reflection of academic achievement regardless of whether the student is enrolled in advanced or general education courses.

3.         How is the new policy different from the current EIC Local policy?

The first primary difference is that the 4.5 GPA cap has been removed. Currently students could earn grade points that would result in a GPA in excess of 4.5; however, the GPA was capped each year at 4.5. The new policy will allow for all grade points earned to be calculated in GPA.

The second primary difference is that specific grade points are awarded for specific numerical grades. For example, a student who earns a 98 or 99 in a class will receive more grade points than a student who earns a 90 or 91. This grade point system is a truer reflection of academic achievement and rewards those students who achieve at higher levels. See Grade Point Conversion (back of letter).

Third, the GPA scale is a 6.0 scale for Pre-AP/AP/GT/AdvAcad, a 5.0 scale for general education courses, and a 4.0 scale for courses which are modified in content by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee.

4.         Why did CCISD choose the 6.0 grade point scale over other grade point scales?

Although the 5.0 scale is a standard scale which is widely used throughout Texas, the grade points awarded on the 6.0 scale are more closely aligned with grade points awarded on the 5.33 scale which has been in affect for several years.

5.                  On the old GPA system, the maximum GPA 4.5. Now that students can earn a higher GPA, will it increase my child’s chances for college admissions?

It is important to note that virtually all universities will recalculate a student’s GPA based on their internal system. There are a wide variety of GPA systems throughout the state of Texas and in the nation. There is little consistency between high schools in their weighting systems, making comparisons of GPAs as reported difficult. GPA scales in the Houston area alone can range from a 4.0 scale to a 120 scale. GPA requirements listed in college catalogs are usually based on the universities recalculation system. 6.                  If my child’s GPA is recalculated, what can I expect?

Although there is no definitive answer, many universities will only consider the foundation areas of English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Languages Other Than English (LOTE) and Advanced Placement courses.  CCISD Administration recommends that you check with specific colleges and universities for clarification of GPA recalculation.  For additional information, please see “How GPA Recalculation Works at the following site: http://www.myfootpath.com/CollegePrep/RecalcGPA.php

7.                  The current policy had a maximum number of grade points students could earn each semester. Are there a maximum number of grade points in the new policy?

No, students will receive all the grade points earned each semester.

8.         Are there a minimum number of advanced courses students must take in order to graduate as an honor graduate from CCISD under the new policy?

No. Honor graduate status will be based on Grade Point Average (GPA). There is no need to set a minimum number of required advanced courses. If students have the requisite GPA, they will be considered an honor graduate.

9.         Are there any changes in Valedictorian and Salutatorian eligibility?

The changes to the current policy are as follows: a student can be eligible for Valedictorian or Salutatorian if they have attended CCISD their final two years in high school, have attended the same high school their entire senior year, and graduate in four years or less.

10.       Is it possible for a three-year graduate to be eligible for Valedictorian or Salutatorian?

Yes. If students meet all other eligibility requirements, and graduates in three years, they can potentially be eligible to be a Valedictorian or Salutatorian. GPA will be calculated in the same manner for all students in a senior class.

11.       Who should I call if I have additional questions about EIC Local?

After school starts, you may contact your child’s counselor for further information. If you have questions during the summer, you may contact the Lead Counselor at the high school campus.
