We are proud to share the recommendations of the CCISD WAVE Expansion Task Force committee.
The Task Force committee, led by Texas A&M professor and gifted expert Dr. Joyce Juntune, was comprised of parents, teachers, and administrators. This hard-working group, through brainstorming and careful deliberation, generated the following comprehensive recommendations for the 2012-13 expansion of the highly successful WAVE Magnet at League City Intermediate School.
2012-2013 Goals: The focus of next year will be a successful WAVE expansion with particular emphasis on:
- maintaining the rigorous and excellent curriculum standards in both WAVE locations
- equitable resources
- advanced staff training
- community and campus collaboration
- communication
Curriculum
Areas to maintain: The WAVE magnet is founded upon research-based, pedagogical principles customized for G/T learners’ special needs. WAVE incorporates interdisciplinary learning, thematically based studies, and a rigorous challenging curriculum. Also, at its core are independent study, student choice and leadership opportunities. With the help of mini courses, advanced technology and real world professional level products, students are able to reach and explore their potential. By using strategies such as pre-assessment and distance learning, WAVE has been able to enhance and elevate the learning of the G/T students. WAVE recognizes that the social and emotional support of students is an integral component of authentic G/T learning. Toward that end, the WAVE Basics class will be offered to 6th graders on both the north and south campuses to provide a foundation for advanced learning. As we move forward with the expansion, CCISD is committed to maintaining WAVE’s unique educational culture and its standard of excellence in both locations.
Additions/Enhancements: The WAVE magnets will work to increase student-led learning with teacher facilitation, expanded opportunities for service learning and an increased focus on leadership development. Equitable technology on both campuses, as well as the use of MOVI, will allow for real-time LCI/WIS collaboration in content areas and unique opportunities for student growth.
Professional Development
Areas to maintain: WAVE staff members are highly trained, and they maintain their content area certifications along with district training. In addition to their specialties, the WAVE teachers are certified in gifted education with at least 30 hours in specialized G/T training.
Additions/Enhancements: Because of the unique nature of the G/T student population, specialized training on the social/emotional needs of GT students will be provided for all WIS and LCI campus staff. Additional opportunities for continuous district training will be offered throughout the year. In addition to the district required GT Supplemental Certificate and 30 hours of G/T training, there will be advanced training of WAVE staff beyond district requirements. WAVE teachers will acquire additional G/T training in the following areas:
- Creative/productive thinking,
- social/emotional, nature and needs
- differentiated instruction
- curriculum/assessment/portfolio
- mini-course development
- Rice AP training
This required professional learning will be accomplished on a rotating basis and consist of a minimum of 100 hours over 3 years. The WAVE staff training will provide and support the establishment of a strong cadre of district G/T trainers.
Environment/School Culture
Areas to maintain: Integrating WAVE G/T students into the campus culture is part of the holistic approach to learning. WAVE students will continue to participate in school wide pep rallies, dances, assemblies, Student Council, sports teams, field trips, and clubs.

Communication and Community Relations

The same services will be available to the LCI WAVE students in the 2012-2013 school year.
Additions/Enhancements: Further additions for the expansion will include a joint North/South WAVE newsletter, LCIS and WIS WAVE liaisons, replication of flagship mini-courses with adjuncts, and a combined WIS and LCIS WAVE Robotics team.
